Lady Cardinal Volleyball Advances to Semifinals

The Lady Cardinal volleyball team continued their playoff run this morning ranked No.1 in Division III with a record of 18-6. They defeated the Pirates of Pearl River at the Pontchartrain Center.

Joci Gravois, senior and middle hitter, said although the team is young, their success is attributed to the sophomore players “who really stepped up this season.”

Jadacia Shanklin, senior and middle hitter, said the team’s endurance is what puts them ahead of tough competition. Shanklin said, “we’re quick, and we can out work a good team.”

Head Coach, Sarah Johnson said, “The girls learned early this season that they can’t wait until 1-2 games into  a match to start playing; the intensity has to remain high from the start.”

Shanklin, Gravois, and Kadie Becnel, senior and libero,  all agree that their biggest reward this season was the win against Country Day.  Gravois said, “The whole team worked together and it showed us our true potential when we perform as a team.”

Moving forward, Gravois said the team’s focus is continuing to improve communication and team-oriented attitudes. Johnson agreed and said their approach to the post season will be to take it one game at a time and focus on limiting errors and maintaining intensity throughout each match.

Shanklin said one of the Lady Cardinals’ strategies to limiting errors is mistakes during the game. Becnel agreed and said, “acknowledge that you messed up and make it better on the next serve.”

Johnson said “They are a fun group to watch. This team is scrappy and gets along well together. Do yourself a favor and take the time to watch our upcoming livestreams.”

The Lady Cardinals’ next action is Friday at 9:00 a.m. at the Pontchartrain Center for the Semifinal match against defending champions the Cabrini Comets.
